Aroylation of Metronidazole: Synthesis of Imidazo-1,4-oxazepines

Reaction of metronidazole (I) with benzoyl chloride, p-nitrobenzoyl chloride, p-chlorobenzoyl chloride and 2-thenoyl chloride yields the corresponding 2-enol benzoates (e.g.II).Hydrolysis with ethanolic hydrochloric acid yields the expected ketones (IV) while hydrolysis with 1:1 sulphuric acid gives derivatives of the novel imidazo-1,4-oxazepine ring system (e.g.VI).
