It is a nitrosamine, a group of compounds formed by the reaction of nitrites with amines or amides. NDBA is a colorless liquid with a slight, characteristic odor and is soluble in water and organic solvents. It is primarily used as a fuel additive in the form of a mixture with other nitroso compounds to improve the performance of diesel engines. However, due to its potential carcinogenic properties, its use has been restricted or banned in many countries. NDBA is also used as a research chemical to study the effects of nitrosamines on biological systems.
