(Chemical Equation Presented) In a different light: A photoinduced change in surface morphology provides reversible changes in the superhydrophobic properties of a photochromic diarylethene film. The effect is achieved by the reversible formation of fine fibril structures on the coated microcrystalline surface upon irradiation by UV or visible light (see picture).

The demethylation of 2-methoxy-3-(2-pyridyl)thiophene with chlrotrimethylsilane-sodium iodide in refluxing acetonitrile or with boron tribromide in dichloromethane at ambient temperature led to the formation of (+/-)-(3R*, 4S*)-3-(2-pyridyl)-4--4,5-dihydrothiophen-2(3H)-one.A possible mechanism by which the compound is formed is proposed. The structure of the compound has been established by X-ray crystallography.
