The base-catalyzed reaction of arylidene and furfurylidene derivatives of malononitrile with oxaloacetic ester leads to the production of 4-substituted 2-amino-3-cyano-4-aryl-4H-pyran-5,6-dicarboxylic esters.In the case of 5-halogenofurfurylidenemalononitriles exchange of the halogen atom by the residue of the organic base and not cycloaddition predominates.
