The reactions between (PPh3)2PtC2H4 and Ph3SnC(S)SR (R = Me, CH2Ph, 2-propenyl) have been studied and the products characterized by analytical, infrared, and multinuclear magnetic resonance (31P, 119Sn, 195Pt) techniques. All spectroscopic data are consistent with simple replacement of ethylene and coordination of the ligand via the C(S)SR portion of the molecule. Crystal data for (PPh3)2Pt(Ph3SnC(S)SMe) (mp 93-95°C dec): Mr = 1160.8, triclinic space group P1, a = 11.9076 (33) A?, b = 12.4511 (37) A?, c = 18.4647 (36) A?, α = 95.22 (2)°, β = 100.49 (2)°, γ = 114.92 (2)°, Z = 2, ρmeasd = 1.59 g cm-3, Mo Kα radiation, R = 0.065, Rw = 0.067 for 3732 independent reflections. The molecular structure determination shows there is η2 coordination of the ligand via the C=S bond with the other sulfur being noncoordinating. The formally platinum(0) center has approximately planar stereochemistry. The initial products of the reaction between (PPh3)2PtC2H4 and Ph3SnC(S)N′ (N′ = NMeH, NCH2CH2CH2CH2 (pyrrolyl)) are also η2-CS coordinated complexes as judged by multinuclear magnetic resonance and infrared studies. However, these complexes rearrange by an internal oxidative-addition reaction to give as the final products the complexes (PPh3)2Pt(Ph)(Ph2SnC(S)N′), which contain a direct platinum-tin bond.
