NEW REARRANGEMENTS OF ARYLHYDRAZONES IN POLYPHOSPHORIC ACID: FORMATION OF DIARYL THIOETHERS AND DIARYLAMINES

When heated at 100 deg C with polyphosphoric acid, several dimethylphenylhydrazones of 4-mercaptoacetophenone, 9, and 4-aminodimethylacetophenones, 12, give 4-acetyl-4'-aminodiphenyl thioethers, 11, and 4-acetyl-4'-aminodiphenylamine derivatives, 16, together with products arising from other, known, paths.Mechanisms of formation of the products are discussed.
