A method was developed for the preparative synthesis of 3,4-dimethylphenyl 4'-chlorophenyl sulfone by sulfonylation of o-xylene and chlorobenzene with 4-chlorobenzene- and 3,4-dimethylbenzenesulfonyl chlorides respectively in the presence of ferric chloride as catalyst.The desired compound was also obtained with an 80 mole percent yield by the reaction of methyl 3,4-dimethylbenzenesulfonate with liquid sulfur trioxide.The main intermediate products in this synthesis are compounds of the RC6H4SO2O.(SO2O)nCH3, where n = O, 1, 2.
