A compound of composition RuCl2(ETP) (ETP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)phenylphosphine) has been shown to contain the binuclear cation [Ru2(μ-Cl)3(ETP)2]+ and Cl-. In CDCl3, the cation is present as a mixture of the staggered and eclipsed isomeric forms. The X-ray crystal structure of [Ru2(μ-Cl)3(ETP)2](CF3SO3) shows that only the eclipsed form is present in the single crystals grown from CH2Cl2/CHCl3/PhMe. The trisolvento complex [Ru(MeCN)3(ETP)](CF3SO3)2 was isolated and its X-ray crystal structure was determined. The ETP ligand in this complex retains facial coordination. It is found that a CDCl3 solution of this complex also contains the monocationic disolvento complex, i.e., [Ru(CF3SO3)(MeCN)2(ETP)] (CF3SO3). The compound RuCl2(TTP) (TTP = bis(3-(diphenylphosphino)propyl)phenylphosphine) was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction and found to be a mononuclear five-coordinate complex with a geometry which is intermediate between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. It was also found that, in MeCN solution, fac-[RuCl2(TTP)] gives octahedral fac-[RuCl(MeCN)2(TTP)]+ in which the TTP ligand maintains facial coordination. The latter structural feature is also present in fac-[Ru(MeCN)3(TTP)]2+.
