During primary fragmentation of the molecular ions of alkyl N-(3,5-dicyano-4-aryl-6-methoxy-2-pyridyl)carbamates hydrogen atoms are transferred from the alkyl residue to the heteroatoms within the urethane group and, probably, to the exocyclic nitrogen atom. This leads to the appearance of ions with masses corresponding to 2-amino- and 2-isocyanato-3,5-dicyano-4-aryl-6-methoxypyridines in the mass spectra.A distinguishing feature of the dissociation of the methyl esters is the formation of +. ions through migration of the urethane methyl group to the endocyclic or exocyclic nitrogen atoms with simultaneous elimination of a carbon dioxide molecule.
