supporting information; experimental part, p. 4067 - 4069 (2009/03/11)
A meso-meso directly linked cyclic octameric porphyrin square was synthesized via stepwise Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reactions, and its ability to capture a guest molecule in the inside cavity has been confirmed. The Royal Society of Chemistry.

We have explored a variety of covalently and non-covalently assembled cyclic porphyrin arrays mainly as biomimetic models of light harvesting antenna in photosynthetic systems. The key reaction is Ag(I)-promoted coupling reaction of 5,15-diaryl zinc(II) porphyrin that provides a meso-meso linked diporphyrin. An advantage of this coupling reaction is its extremely easy extension to higher porphyrin arrays, since longer porphyrin arrays have practically the same reactivity as that of the monomer. On the basis of this strategy, we have prepared cyclic porphyrin arrays including directly meso-meso linked porphyrin rings CZ4-CZ8, large porphyrin wheels C12ZA and C24ZB, and three-dimensional porphyrin boxes D1-D3. Efficient excitation energy transfer along these cyclic porphyrin arrays has been revealed by the time-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence measurements.

In noncoordinating solvents, meso-cinchomeronimide appended Zn(II) porphyrin 2 forms a cyclic trimer, while diporphyrins 7 exhibit high-fidelity self-sorting assembling to form discrete cyclic trimer, tetramer, and pentamer with large association constants from 7in-in, 7in-out, and 7out-out, respectively, through almost perfect discrimination of enantiomeric and conformational differences of the mesocinchomeronimide substituents. In the latter self-sorting processes, the dihedral angles dictated by the two pyridyl nitrogen atoms control the size of the aggregates; the trimer from 7in-in, the tetarmer from 7in-out, and the pentamer from 7out-out. Cyclic structures of (2)3 and (R-7out-out)5 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Directly meso-meso linked porphyrin rings CZ4, CZ6, and CZ8 that respectively comprise four, six, and eight porphyrins have been synthesized in a stepwise manner from a 5, 10-diaryl zinc(II) porphyrin building block. Symmetric cyclic structures have been
