Derivatives of 9-(2-hydroxyethoxymethyl) guanine

Compounds of the general formula STR1 (wherein X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom, R1 represents a hydroxy or amino group, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a group of formula --CH2 OR3a and R3 and R3a which may be the same or different, each represents an amino acid acyl radical) and physiologically acceptable salts thereof are useful for the treatment of viral infections and have been found to have a surprisingly high water-solubility which renders them of value in the formulation of aqueous pharmaceutical preparations. Processes for preparing the compounds are described.
