Simple and efficient one-pot solvent-free synthesis of N-methyl imines of aromatic aldehydes

A one-pot solvent-free synthesis of N-methyl imines in good to excellent yields was performed by grinding together aromatic aldehydes and methylamine hydrochloride in the presence of a base. The best yields were achieved when an excess of methylamine hydrochloride and inexpensive sodium hydrogen carbonate was used (usually in a molar ratio ArCHO/CH3NH2· HCl/NaHCO3 = 1:5:5), allowing the reaction to proceed for 1 h (in the case of aromatic aldehydes containing electron-withdrawing substituents) or overnight (in the case of electron-rich aldehydes). After a simple work-up (extraction with diethyl ether) the obtained products were mostly pure enough for spectral characterization. In this way, 31 N-methyl imines were prepared, among which eight were synthesized for the first time. Their structures were elucidated by spectral means (1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, MS) whenever it was possible. In the case of salicylaldehyde and 4-chlorobenzaldehyde, the synthesis of the corresponding imines was also conducted on a gram-scale with a 72% and 84% isolated yield, respectively. The present approach not only provides good to high yields, but also eliminates the disadvantages of the traditional synthesis of N-methyl imines, such as the use of hazardous solvents and more or less expensive catalysts and the necessity of work/handling with an anhydrous gas in pressurized containers.

The synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of both metal-only and anion encapsulated salicylaldoxime-based complexes utilizing a new 1,3-xylyl strap are described. X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that the aromatic spacer restricts the confirmation flexibility of the resulting complexes leading to dicopper(II) double helicate and dicopper(II) 2 + 2 box structural forms. The choice of the structural motif is influenced by the anion present, with the copper(II) nitrate-containing complex [NO3? (Cu2L32)](NO3)3, 4, adopting a double helicate form, whereas the analogous copper(II) bromide complexes [2Br?(Cu2L32)](Br)2, 5, and [2Br?(Cu2L32)](BF4) 2, 6, both adopt 2 + 2 box structural configurations. Spectroscopic analysis has shown an enhancement in the binding strength of ClO4- over the anions SO42- and NO3-. The enhanced rigidity caused by the use of the 1,3-xylyl spacer in this series of complexes has favored the formation of the double loaded dibromide complex.

Schiff bases (3a-d and 4a-c), synthesized from benzenedicarbaldehydes (terephthalaldehyde and isophthalaldehyde) and primary amines (methylamine, ethylamine, butylamine, and aniline), were carbonylated in the presence of Co2(CO)8 under an elevated pressure at 200-290 deg C to give dicarbonylated products, benzodipyrrolediones (5a-d, 10a-c, and 11a-c), in high yields. 1,2,3,4-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid (prehnitic acid) and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (pyromellitic acid) were prepared selectively by the oxidation of the benzodipyrrolediones with nitric acid.Structu ral analysis of the benzodipyrrolediones by NMR spectra and the mechanism of the carbonylation reaction are discussed.
