The synthesis of (7(tert-butyldimethylsiloxy)hepta-3,4-dien-1-yl)triphenylphosphonium iodide (1) is described.The ylide derived from 1 undergoes highly stereoselective Wittig reactions with aliphatic aldehydes to give a series of (7Z)-nonadeca-3,4,7-trien-1-ols (4) which were transformed into arachidonic acid analogues including (8Z,11Z,14Z)-eicosa-4,5,8,11,14-pentaenoic acid (9).
