A novel organic semiconductor, 2,9-bis(perfluorobutyl)pentacene, was synthesized in seven steps, and was characterized by NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopy. From differential scanning calorimetry analyses, no liquid crystalline phase was observed, unlike 2,9-dibutylpentacene. The morphology of thin films formed at different substrate temperatures was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction analysis. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) fabricated with this compound showed electron mobility of 1.7 × 10-1cm2 V-1 s-1 using Ag source-drain electrodes.
