By the action of bis(trifluoroacetic) anhydride on 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone imine in the presence of pyridine the N-(trifluoroacetyl) derivative of the imine is formed, and this reacts with alkyl vinyl ethers and with ketene with the formation, respectively, of dihydro-1,3-oxazines and of a dihydro-1,3-oxazin-6(6H)-one.The latter is converted by hydrolysis with dilute and with concentrated acids into 3-phenyl-N-(trifluoroacetyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)-β-alanine and the free acid.

The reaction of N,N'-bis(1-chloroalkyl)carbodiimides with carboxylic acids has been studied. The initial reaction products are anhydrides of the carboxylic acids of N,N'-bisalkylideneureas.Under the conditions of the reaction the latter undergo further con
