The effect of gem-dialkyl groups and of other bulky substituents on the stability of a four-membered NCCPt ring system has been investigated, cf. the Thorpe-Ingold effect. It is observed that when an amine attacks alkene complexes cis-[PtCl2(alkene)Y], cyclic as opposed to acyclic products are more likely to be produced if the amine is secondary and the alkene is substituted.
