A Convenient Synthesis of Karanjachromene (Pongaflavone), Pongachromene and Their Analogues

The naturally occurring flavonols, karanjachromene (3a) and pongachromene (3b) have been conveniently synthesized in two steps: (i) condensation of 6-acetyl-5-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylchromene (1) with benzaldehyde and piperonal in the presence of alkali and subsequent oxidation with alkaline H2O2 to give flavonols 2a and 2b respectively; and (ii) methylation of 2a and 2b to give 3a and 3b respectively.The corresponding linear isomers (6a and 6b) have also been synthesized from 6-acetyl-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylchromene (4) via flavonols 5a and 5b respectively.
