4-(Cyanomethyl)indoles and 4-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-indoles were synthesized from 5-halo-4-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindoles by means of Horner-Wittig reaction and succesive dehydrohalogenation.
