It has been shown that under the conditions of the Nef reaction potassium salts of 3,5-diaryl-2-isoxazolyl-4-nitronic acids form trans-3,5-diaryl-4-nitro-2-isoxazolines instead of the expected 3,5-diaryl-4-isoxazolones.The epimerization of the stereoisomeric 3,5-diaryl-4-nitro-2-isoxazolines in the presence of basic catalysts has been discussed.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of trans-β-nitrostyrenes 1a-d to benzonitrile N-oxide 2 has been investigated.It was found that regioisomeric 4,5-dihydro-1,2-oxazoles were formed as primary products due to two possible orientations of reactants in the transitio
