It has been shown that under the conditions of the Nef reaction potassium salts of 3,5-diaryl-2-isoxazolyl-4-nitronic acids form trans-3,5-diaryl-4-nitro-2-isoxazolines instead of the expected 3,5-diaryl-4-isoxazolones.The epimerization of the stereoisomeric 3,5-diaryl-4-nitro-2-isoxazolines in the presence of basic catalysts has been discussed.
