In addition to establishing the reversible nature of the oxidative addition of RX (R = CH3, CD3; X = Br, I) to [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2, we have observed that [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2 catalyzes halogen exchange between CH3Br and CD3I as well as between [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2Br2 and CH3I in CDCl3. The results of attempted halogen exchange with a variety of alkyl halides suggests that a SN2 process is likely via the formation of [[Au(CH2)2PPh2]2CH3] +I-; thus the dinuclear gold(I) complex effects exchange by ionization of CH3I.

Full title: Testing β-hydrogen activity toward dinuclear gold(I). The reactivity of the gold(I) ylide dimer [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2 with ethyl iodide and trifluoroethyl iodide. Crystal and molecular structures of [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2(CH 2CF3)I and [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2(CH 2CH3)I. The gold(I) ylide dimer [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2, 1, reacts with neat CH3CH2I to give [Au(CH2)2PPh2]2(CH 3CH2)I, 2. The gold(II) adduct 2 has been characterized structurally. The gold(I) ylide dimer 1 reacts with CF3CH2I in benzene to give the gold(II)-alkyl halide adduct [Au(CH2]2PPh2]2(CH 2CF3)I, 3, in good yield. The gold(II) adduct 3 has also been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction methods.
