Synthesis of the dioxabicyclononane unit of tirandamycin

A seven-step synthesis of (±)-3b, an advanced, common intermediated for construction of the dioxabicyclononane units of both tirandamycin and streptolydigin is described. Conversion of 3b to the fully developed fragment of tirandamycin is also reported.
