yourDictionary.com's immediate predecessor, A Web of Online Dictionaries, was launched in 1995 by Dr. Robert Beard at Bucknell University, as a research tool for the world's linguistic community. Over the years, Paul JJ Payack, a high tech marketing executive and former student of Dr. Beard, had often used the site in naming new products and services. Upon learning that Dr. Beard was about to retire, Payack approached Dr. Beard about transforming his website into a commercial venture.
