Diantimony pentoxide Specification

The Antimony pentoxide, with the CAS registry number 1314-60-9 and EINECS registry number 215-237-7, has the systematic name of 1,3-dioxodistiboxane 1,3-dioxide. And the molecular formula of this chemical is Sb2O5. It is a kind of yellow powder, and belongs to the product categories of Industrial/Fine Chemicals and Inorganics. What's more, it always occurs in hydrated form, Sb2O5.nH2O.

The physical properties of Antimony pentoxide are as following: (1)#H bond acceptors: 5; (2)#H bond donors: 0; (3)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 2; (4)Polar Surface Area: 77.51 Å2.

Preparation of Antimony pentoxide: It can be prepared by oxidation of antimony trioxide with nitric acid. And the hydrated oxide is prepared by hydrolysis of antimony pentachloride; or by acidification of potassium hexahydroxoantimonate.

Uses of Antimony pentoxide: It is used as a flame retardant in ABS and other plastics, a flocculant in the production of titanium dioxide, and sometimes be used in the production of glass, paint and adhesives. What's more, it is used as an ion-exchange resin for a number if cations in acidic solution including Na+ (especially for their selective retentions). It is also used as a polymerization and oxidation catalyst. In addition, it is used for determination of manganese in tissue.

You should be cautious while dealing with this chemical. It irritates eyes, respiratory system and skin.
