Three strains of histidine-dependent S. typhimurium, TA1535, TA98, and TA100 were used. Of 10 compds. 9-vinylanthracene (I) [2444-68-0], vinylcarbazole [1484-13-5], 3-vinyl-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane (II) [106-86-5] and 3-epoxyethyl-7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane [106-87-6] were mutagens. The study confirmed the overall genotoxicity of vinyl compds. and epoxides and the need to carefully screen them for mutagenic/carcinogenic effects.

The epoxysilicones, prepd. by treating poly(dimethylsiloxanes) with allyl glycidyl ether [106-92-3] or vinyl cyclohexene oxide [106-86-5], impart a high level of shrink resistance that is very durable. The shrink resistance and rate of curing may be varied considerably by changing the polymer structure, curing agents, or quantities of reactants. .
