- 2,5-Hexanedione excretion after occupational exposure to n-hexane
- 2,5-Hexanedione excretion after occupational exposure to n-hexane. Ahonen, I.; Schimberg, R. W. (Tampere Reg. Inst. Occup. Health, Tampere SF-33101, Finland). Br. J. Ind. Med., 45(2), 133-6 (English) 1988. CODEN: BJIMAG. ISSN: 0007-1072. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 59 (Air Pollution and Industrial Hygiene) Section cross-reference(s): 4, 45 The urinary excretion of the n-hexane metabolite 2,5-hexandione (I) was detd. in shoe factory workers during 4 working days that were preceded by 4 free days and followed by 2 free days. The correlation between excretion of I and the n-hexane concns. in workroom air was evaluated. The air concns. of n-hexane and those of Me2CO, PhMe, and other org. solvents were monitored with charcoal tubes. All the urine from each worker was collected at freely chosen intervals during the exptl. period and the following 2 free days. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatog. The relative excretion of I increased as the exposure to n-hexane increased, although it seemed that I accumulated progressively in the body at the highest n-hexane concns. and at higher total solvent concns.

- 2,5-Hexanedione exposure alters the rat sertoli cell cytoskeleton. I. Microtubules and seminiferous tubule fluid secretion. Johnson, Kamin J.; Hall, Eric S.; Boekelheide, Kim (Dep. Pathol., Brown Univ., Providence, RI 02912, USA). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol., 111(3), 432-42 (English) 1991. CODEN: TXAPA9. ISSN: 0041-008X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The effects of 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) on seminiferous tubule fluid (STF) secretion, testis morphol., and tubulin distribution were examd. Rats (200 g) were exposed to 1% 2,5-HD in the drinking water for 5 wk followed by a 3-wk recovery period. STF secretion was measured by efferent duct ligation, and testis cross sections were prepd. at 2, 3, 3.43, 3.57, 3.86, 4, and 8 wk after beginning exposure. A dramatic inhibition of STF secretion was obsd. between weeks 3 and 4. The inhibition of STF secretion occurred following simultaneous changes in Sertoli cell and elongate spermatid morphol. but prior to changes in round spermatid morphol. Also, alterations in seminiferous tubule tubulin distribution were obsd. with kinetics similar to those for changes in seminiferous tubule morphol. This temporal sequence suggests a model of 2,5-HD-induced injury in which populations of germ cells are differentially sensitive to impairment of Sertoli cell function.
