The most active compds. from this group include two simple lactams, piperidinones I (R1 = OH, R2 = Me) and I (R1 = MeO, R2 = H) and two N-ethoxycarbonyl lactams I (R1 = OH, Me; R2 = CO2Et), whose anticonvulsant activity was comparable to or better than that for valproic acid. Four related acyclic amides, e.g., PhEtC(OH)CONHMe, were also prepd. 598-21-0 and 506-96-7 are just another two chemicals used in this study., but these were essentially inactive as anticonvulsants. .

At an application rate of 11.2 kg/ha, II gave 75-99% control of morning glory. Various methods of prepn. of I (R 1 H) from I (R = H) were described. .
