After 2 h at 90-5.degree. a quaternized polymer was recovered. Solns. contg. 50 and 75 ppm of this polymer were injected into agar nutrient contg. Aerobacter aerogenes and the no. of surviors was reduced from 45 and 24/ml .times. 102 after 30 min exposure to the polymer soln., to 10 and 4 after 60 min, and 0 and 0 after 180 min. resp. .
