Phase-transfer catalysis of the phosphonium polymers was examd. by means of a typical SN2 reaction between 1-bromooctane [111-83-1] and NaCN in a biphase system. The apparent rate const. (kobs) was detd., its magnitude being smaller by about one order than that of the corresponding monomeric model dibutylhexadecylphenylphosponium iodide [107701-58-6]. Crosslinked polymeric phosphonium ion species were coated on powd. alumina and used as a phase-transfer catalyst for the SN2 reaction in a triphase system. Due to the inhomogeneous reaction, the kobs value was much smaller (1/5) than that in the presence of the uncrosslinked phosphonium polymer. .

Thus, 2 g chloromethylated I (1 mequiv Cl/g) and 2 g polyethylene glycol monotridecyl ether of d.p. 6.5 were stirred at 65° in THF with 2 g NaOH, treated with 0.9 g Bu4NCl over 8 h, and stirred an addnl. 7 h, giving catalyst beads (A) contg. 45% glycol ether. Treating octyl bromide [111-83-1] with an equimolar amt. of NaI in toluene at 80° for 5 h in the presence of 5.7 mol% A gave a 53.0% yield of the displacement product octyl iodide [629-27-6]. The catalyst was recycled 5 times to the reaction with no apparent loss of activity.
