- Volume reduction of aqueous radioactive wastes. Kadner, Martin; Halwachs, Werner; Heiduk, Joachim (NUKEM G.m.b.H., Fed. Rep. Ger.). Ger. Offen. DE 3238961 A1 26 Apr 1984, 11 pp. (German). (Germany). CODEN: GWXXBX. CLASS: IC: G21F009-08. APPLICATION: DE 82-3238961 21 Oct 1982. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 71 (Nuclear Technology) Section cross-reference(s): 58 To reduce the vol. and solidify aq. nitrate-contg. radioactive waste solns. in the low- and intermediate-level ranges, a process is required in which larger quantities of waste than formerly can be bound into the matrix with good compatibility and with the lowest possible nitrate content. For this purpose, the waste soln. is evapd. with H3PO4, wherein 1 mol of H3PO4 is added/2-2.5 mol of nitrate and the residue is heated to 250-450° to form Na2HPO4 [7558-79-4]. In an example, a simulated intermediate-/low-level liq. waste, contg. mostly nitrates and Mo as Na molybdate, was treated by 1st adding 203.5 g of H3PO4 (85 wt.%) 1 L of the simulated waste to produce a bright green clear soln. The mol ratio of NaNO3/H3PO4 is 2:1. The soln. was then heated in a flask to evap. it to dryness and the residue was heated finally for 3 h at 300° to distill off the HNO3 as NOx. Final removal of the nitrate took place during a 1-h heating at 450°. The formation of Na2HPO4 and the absence of nitrate were verified by tests. The product could be imbedded in cement, bitumen or an org. binder based on synthetic resin.
