DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Plumbagin [481-42-5], naphthazarin [475-38-7], 2-hydroxynaphthoquinone [83-72-7], vitamin K3 (menadione) [58-27-5], juglone [481-39-0], and 7-methyljuglone [14787-38-3] were mutagenic to S. 481-42-5 and 573-40-0 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. typhimurium strain TA2637 with metabolic activation. Except for juglone and 7-methyljuglone, these compds. also had slight mutagenic effects on strain TA98 with S9 mix. All the mutagenic naphthoquinones contain 1 or 2 hydroxyl and(or) Me substituents. The naphthoquinone mompain [2473-16-7], which has 4 hydroxyl groups, was not mutagenic. Unsubstituted b-naphthoquinone [524-42-5], naphthoquinones with a prenyl side chain, and all binaphthoquinone derivs. tested were nonmutagenic. None of the 13 benzoquinones examd. was mutagenic to any of the strains used with or without metabolic activation. Thus, natural naphthoquinones are mutagenic when they have only 1 or 2 hydroxyl and(or) Me substituents. .
