- A family of extended heterocyclic oligomers with thienylene/thiazolylene vinylene cores and triphenylamino/carbazolyl terminals
-
A series of semiconducting thienylene/thiazolylene vinylene oligomers with triphenylamino/carbazolyl terminal groups have been designed and prepared successfully. Synthetic, structural, thermal, spectral and electrochemical comparisons have been carried out for related compounds. The photophysical results demonstrate that all the vinylene oligomers and their precursors show high luminescence quantum yields. In addition, X-ray single-crystal structure analysis of a typical thiophene based double-bond compound 7 indicates a molecular length of 2.72 nm with the E-configuration.

- Two birds with one stone: a NIR fluorescent probe for mitochondrial protein imaging and its application in photodynamic therapy
-
Mitochondrial proteins, most of which are encoded in the nucleus and the rest of which are regulated by the mitochondrial genome, play pivotal roles in essential cellular functions. However, fluorescent probes that can be used for monitoring mitochondrial proteins have not yet been widely developed, thereby severely limiting the exploration of the functions of proteins in mitochondria. Towards this end, here we propose a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probeMPPto effectively illuminate the dynamic changes in mitochondrial proteins in live cells under oxidative stress, with excellent temporal and spatial resolution. Of particular importance,MPPextends the study of the pharmacology involved in apoptosis induced by anti-cancer drugs (hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT), epirubicin (Epi) and cyclophosphamide (CPA)) for the first time. Furthermore, employing a protein-activatable strategy, this probe could serve as an excellent phototherapeutic agent in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Finally,in vivoexperiments suggest that this versatile probe can be used to image tumors in HeLa tumor-bearing mice for 24 h, which demonstrates that our probe could play a dual role as a robust phototherapeutic and imaging agent.

- Functionalized Acrylonitriles with Aggregation-Induced Emission: Structure Tuning by Simple Reaction-Condition Variation, Efficient Red Emission, and Two-Photon Bioimaging
-
Acrylonitriles with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics have been found to show promising applications in two-photon biomedical imaging. Generally, elaborate synthetic efforts are required to achieve different acrylonitriles with distinct functionalities. In this work, we first reported the synthesis of two different group-functionalized AIE-active acrylonitriles (TPAT-AN-XF and 2TPAT-AN) obtained simply by mixing the same reactants at different temperatures using a facile and transition metal-free synthetic method. These two AIE luminogens (AIEgens) exhibit unique properties such as bright red emission in the solid state, large Stokes shift, and large two-photon absorption cross section. Water-soluble nanoparticles (NPs) of 2TPAT-AN were prepared by a nanoprecipitation method. In vitro imaging data show that 2TPAT-AN NPs can selectively stain lysosome in live cells. Besides one-photon imaging, remarkable two-photon imaging of live tumor tissues can be achieved with high resolution and deep tissue penetration. 2TPAT-AN NPs show high biocompatibility and are successfully utilized in in vivo long-term imaging of mouse tumors with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, the present work is anticipated to shed light on the preparation of a library of AIE-active functionalized acrylonitriles with intriguing properties for biomedical applications.

-
The compounds trans-M2(TiPB)2(L) 2 and trans-M2(TiPB)2(L′) 2 have been prepared from the reactions between M2(T iPB)4 (TiPB = 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoate, M = Mo or W) and LH or L′H (~2 equiv.), respectively, where L = O 2CC(CN)CH-C6H4-NPh2 and L′ = O2CC(CN)CH-C4H3S-C6H 4-NPh2. These cyanoacrylate ligands promote intense M 2δ to L or L′ π*-transitions that span the range 550-1100 nm. The two molybdenum complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray studies that reveal the extensive L-M2-L or L′-M2-L′ M2δ-ligand π-conjugation. The new compounds have been characterized by electronic structure calculations employing density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT, cyclic voltammetry, electronic absorption and steady state emission spectroscopy and femtosecond (fs) and nanosecond (ns) time resolved transient absorption (TA) and fs time-resolved infrared spectroscopy (TRIR). The latter allows the determination of the S1 states as 1MLCT that are delocalized over both L and L′. For molybdenum the T1 states are 3MoMoδδ* whereas for tungsten they are 3MLCT.

- Small molecular push-pull donors for organic photovoltaics: effect of the heterocyclic π-spacer
-
A series of (D-π-A) small push-pull molecules involving a triphenylamine electron-rich group (D) connected to a dicyanovinyl electron-deficient unit (A) through different chalcogenophene type π-connectors has been synthesized. Optical and electrochemical results reveal that the replacement of furan by thiophene and selenophene leads to a progressive decrease of the optical band gap of the material and to a parallel increase of hole mobility and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Thus, a PCE of 3.33% has been obtained for a simple air-processed solar cell involving the selenophene-based donor and the [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) as the acceptor.

The invention relates to a dark red/near-infrared multifunctional aggregation-induced light-emitting material, a preparation method and application thereof. During co-culture of the molecule with bacteria, specific "lightening" imaging of gram-positive bacteria can be realized; the strong electron donating (D)-electron withdrawing (A) effect of the molecule itself causes absorption and emission wavelength red shift of the molecule, thus having dark red/near-infrared fluorescence emission and strong ROS generation capacity. Meanwhile, the aggregation-induced light-emitting material provided by the invention can efficiently kill gram-positive bacteria.

- Facile synthesis of AIEgens with wide color tunability for cellular imaging and therapy
-
Luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics are nowadays undergoing explosive development in the fields of imaging, process visualization, diagnosis and therapy. However, exploration of an AIE luminogen (AIEgen) system allowing for extremely wide color tunability remains challenging. In this contribution, the facile synthesis of triphenylamine (TPA)-thiophene building block-based AIEgens having tunable maximum emission wavelengths covering violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, deep red and NIR regions is reported. The obtained AIEgens can be utilized as extraordinary fluorescent probes for lipid droplet (LD)-specific cell imaging and cell fusion assessment, showing excellent image contrast to the cell background and high photostability, as well as satisfactory visualization outcomes. Interestingly, quantitative evaluation of the phototherapy effect demonstrates that one of these presented AIEgens, namely TTNIR, performs well as a photosensitizer for photodynamic ablation of cancer cells upon white light irradiation. This study thus provides useful insights into rational design of fluorescence systems for widely tuning emission colors with high brightness, and remarkably extends the applications of AIEgens.

- Evaluation of Structure-Function Relationships of Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens for Simultaneous Dual Applications of Specific Discrimination and Efficient Photodynamic Killing of Gram-Positive Bacteria
-
Bacterial infectious diseases, especially those caused by Gram-positive bacteria, have been seriously threatening human health. Preparation of a multifunctional system bearing both rapid bacterial differentiation and effective antibacterial effects is highly in demand, but remains a severe challenge. Herein, we rationally designed and successfully developed a sequence of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with orderly enhanced D-A strength. Evaluation of structure-function relationships reveals that AIEgens having intrinsic positive charge and proper ClogP value are able to stain Gram-positive bacteria. Meanwhile, one of the presented AIEgens (TTPy) can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in extraordinarily high efficiency under white light irradiation due to the smaller singlet-triplet energy gap. Thanks to the NIR emission, excellent specificity to Gram-positive bacteria, and effective ROS generation efficiency, TTPy has been proved to perform well in selective photodynamic killing of Gram-positive bacteria in vitro, such as S. aureus and S. epidermidis, even in S. aureus-infected rat wounds.

- Efficient organic dyes containing dibenzo heterocycles as conjugated linker part for dye-sensitized solar cells
-
Six new organic dyes, TBS1-TBS6, have been synthesized and characterized by optical, electrochemical, and theoretical studies. Among these dyes, DSSCs based on a dye containing N-hexylcarbazole and furan moieties (TBS4) showed the best performance, with light-to-electricity conversion efficiency up to 5.91% under AM 1.5 solar simulator, much higher than the reference dye TPS (4.24%). The high Voc contributed to the good performance for TBS4, which may be ascribed to the combined effects of twisted structure and hexyl chain. Additionally, for TBS4 based DSSCs, under optimized conditions, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency was enhanced up to 7.09%. The results suggest that dibenzo heterocycles containing dyes are promising candidates for application in DSSCs.

- Synthesis and characterization of conjugated polymers with main-chain donors and pendent acceptors for dye-sensitized solar cells
-
Herein, we report three conjugated polymers with main-chain donors and pendent π-acceptors as photosensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The polymer PPTZF (which contains a phenothiazine (PTZ) chromophore and has a 9,9-dioctyl-fluorene (F) group as the donor unit in the main chain and a cyanoacrylic acid acceptor in the side chain, linked by a thiophene unit) was used as a basic structure. Then 9,9-dioctyl-carbazole (CZ) and triphenylamine (TPA) were selected to replace F and PTZ, respectively, as structural modifications to get another two polymers: PPTZCZ and PTPACZ. Finally, we fabricated devices and examined the effects of different donors with flexible alkyl chains on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. Our studies have revealed that the PTPACZ dye, which has a degree of polymerization (DP) of ~4, exhibited excellent photovoltaic performance with a relatively high power conversion efficiency of 4.4% under standard (Global Air Mass 1.5) illumination. Charge extraction and transient photovoltage decay measurements have demonstrated that the charge recombination lifetime (τ) is a crucial influencing factor on the open-circuit voltage of these polymer dyes. - Anti-recombination organic dyes containing dendritic triphenylamine moieties for high open-circuit voltage of DSSCs
-
Three novel sensitizers with dendritic triphenylamine moieties were synthesized and used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties were extensively investigated. All three DSSCs exhibit high open-circuit voltage over 0.8 V. The photovoltaic results indicate that the dendritic triphenylamine units improve the open-circuit voltage, which is attributed to the retardation of charge recombination, demonstrating that non-planar and larger molecules exert better blocking function. Under standard global AM 1.5 solar conditions, the best performance of the DSSCs exhibits a short-circuit current density of 10.35 mA cm-2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.836 V and a fill factor of 0.68, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 5.87%.

- Tuning photophysical properties of triphenylamine and aromatic cyano conjugate-based wavelength-shifting compounds by manipulating intramolecular charge transfer strength
-
A series of triphenylamine-based aromatic cyano compounds have been synthesized as red-emitting fluorophores with large Stokes shifts in both solution (>100 nm in CHCl3) and solid state (>150 nm in film). Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties of the synthesized compounds are examined using UV-Vis absorptions, photoluminescence measurements and solvatochromic studies. Our studies suggest that Stokes shifts of these compounds can be fine-tuned by manipulating the ICT strength between donor and acceptor with various electronic donating groups, and the largest Stokes shifts are typically associated with compounds that have the strong ICT characters. The observed spectroscopic properties of the compounds are consistent with theoretical calculations using density function theory (DFT) or time-dependent density function theory (TD-DFT). The calculations suggest that the ICT occurs from localized HOMO to localized LUMO with magnitudes of 60-80%. The relative quantum yields of these fluorophores in solution are various and highly solvent dependent. In solid state, the quantum yields of the compounds are significantly increased and some can reach to 0.40.

- An iterative approach to the synthesis of thiophene-based organic dyes
-
We developed an iterative synthetic method for oligo-aryl compounds using an organosilicon-based palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction. Aryl compounds containing a benzyloxy(diisopropyl)silyl group (masked Si group) had sufficient chemical stability, and the unmasking step proceeded in a high yield under mild conditions. Both of the key unmasking/coupling steps required no strict anhydrous or degassed conditions. The developed procedure was used for the synthesis of thiophene-based organic dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells.
