Ceric ammonium nitrate Production

Ceric ammonium nitrate(16774-21-3) is produced by dissolving Ce2O3 in hot concentrated HNO3.

Ceric ammonium nitrate Specification

The Ceric ammonium nitrate, with the CAS registry number 16774-21-3 and EINECS registry number 240-827-6, has the systematic name of cerium(4+) tetranitrate-nitric acid (1:2) diammoniate. It is a kind of yellow-orange crystals, and belongs to the following product categories: Inorganics; Others; Oxidation; Synthetic Reagents. And the molecular formula of this chemical is CeN8H8O6N18. What's more, it is water-soluble, and widely used as an oxidising agent in organic synthesis and as a standard oxidant in quantitative analysis.

The physical properties of Ceric ammonium nitrate are as followings: (1)#H bond acceptors: 26; (2)#H bond donors: 8; (3)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 0; (4)Polar Surface Area: 392.1 Å2.

The preparation of Ceric ammonium nitrate: The anion [Ce(NO3)6]2- is generated by dissolving Ce2O3 in hot concentrated nitric acid. And the salt consists of the anion [Ce(NO3)6]2- and a pair of NH4+ counter ions. The ammonium ions are not involved in the oxidising reactions of this salt. In the anion each nitrato group is chelated to the cerium atom in a bidentate manner.

You should be cautious while dealing with this chemical. If contact with combustible material, and may cause fire. And this chemical has risk of serious damage to eyes, and cause sensitization by inhalation. Therefore, you had better take the following instructions: Keep away from combustible material; Keep away from combustible material; Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection, and in case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice; In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show label where possible).
