Ferroptosis activator

A ferroptosis activator is a compound that promotes or induces ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Ferroptosis is distinct from other forms of cell death such as apoptosis or necrosis and involves the accumulation of lipid peroxides, particularly phospholipid hydroperoxides. These activators typically inhibit glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), a key enzyme that protects cells from lipid peroxidation by reducing lipid hydroperoxides to their corresponding alcohols. By inhibiting GPX4, ferroptosis activators disrupt cellular antioxidant defenses, leading to the accumulation of lipid peroxides and eventual cell death.
