The reaction of diethyl <(methylthio or arylthio)methyl>phosphonate with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) affords α-chloromethanephosphonate(5), which can be converted into a variety of O,S-thioacetals of formylphosphonates(2) by reaction with alcohols.
