Treatment of aromatic aldehydes with ammonia and hypophosphorus acid gave C2- symmetric 1-aminoarylmethylphosphinic acids. The latter compounds, activated in the presence of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) or trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl), successfully reacted with methyl acrylate to afford symmetric pseudodipeptides.
