To investigate the well known dependence of 31P NMR chemical shift values on the ring size of phosphametallacycloalkanes, we compared the series of cyclic and acyclic complexes, Br(OC)4MnPPh2(CH2)nH (1a-1d), (η⁵-C5H5)Cl(OC)2WPPh2(CH2)nH (2a-2c), (η⁵-C5H5)Me(OC)2WPPh2(CH2)nH (3a-3c), (4b-4d), (5b,5c) (n=2 (a), 3 (b), 4 (c), 5 (d)).Different conformations have an obvious influence on the 31P and 13C chemical shift of metal adjacent ring atoms.The structure of phosphawolframacyclopentane (5b) in solution differs from the crystaline state.
