Synthesis of 1-acetyl-8-methylhydrindan-5-one (3) by the conjugate addition-enolate protonation of the 3-alkyl-2-methyl-1-acetylcyclopentene 1 followed by the cyclization of the cyanhydrin ether, and discussions for the diastereoselectivity in the enolate protonation based on MM2 calculations are presented.
