The solvolysis of (-)-(1R)-2,2-dimethyl-3-oxotrifluoromethylsulfonyloxynorbornane <(-)-8> in 60percent ethanol takes place with cleavage of C-2/C-3 bond to afford a mixture of (-)-(1R)-3-(1-methylethylidene)cyclopentane carboxylic acid (-)-(1c) (56percent) and its corresponding ethyl ester (-)-1d (21percent).
