A facile synthesis of polysubstituted (Z)-tetrahydrofurylidenes using anhydrosugars is described. The (Z)-compounds can be conveniently isomerized to the (E)-products. The regiochemistry of the annulation reaction can be reversed by judicious choice of the leaving groups.
