Photochemical synthesis of carbazole derivatives

The preparation of the dione 3 from ethyl-1,3-acetonedicarboxylate (11) is described. Its condensation with various aniline derivatives has been studied. The aryleneaminoketone 5b was photocyclized and converted into the new carbazole 8.
