p-Chloranil and N,NЈ-diphenylthiourea have been shown to
react via a 1:1 molecular complex as an intermediate giving two
products, P and Q. In the 1:2 stoichiometry as obtained by
Job’s method, the second molecule of DPTU is required
for abstraction of HCl from P. The reaction path has been
established by kinetic study. One product, P, shows solvato-
chromism sensitive enough to be used as a probe material for
measuring the polarity of nonaromatic solvents.
