Conditions for the equilibration between a nitro-substituted imide and its ring-opened amide-acid salt were established.Evidence was found that nitro displacement by an aryl oxide nucleophile occured only in the imide form.Extensive 13C NMR data are presented as structural evidence and for distinguishing amide acid isomers.
