A clay catalyzed synthesis of 2-(2',2',2'-trichloro)ethylidene-3-oxo-3- (2_-chlorophenyl)propionate (2) and its application for the preparation of various N-alkyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids (5a-e) has been described.
