Spectra of manganese(III) complexes. I. Aquomanganese(III) ion and hydroxide, fluoride, and chloride complexes

The absorption spectrum of aqueous manganese(III) is described in the presence and absence of added halide ions. Addition of fluoride to solutions containing aqueous manganese(III) causes a distinct splitting of the ⁵T_2g ← ⁵E_g (in O_h) to occur. This is shown to be consistent with the formation of MnF²⁺, Mn³⁺ + F^- = MnF²⁺ with K ? 10⁶ at ～23°. Jahn-Teller effects are thought to influence the observed spectra.
