Reactions of 1--2-methylpyridinium iodides with activated ethoxymethylene compounds in the presence of alkali gave the corresponding 1--2-allylidene-1,2-dihydropyridines in considerable yields, and their thermolyses in benzene afforded 2-alkylthio-3-vinylpyrazolo<1,5-a>pyridine derivatives.
