A general way for introducing axial chirality in phase transfer catalysts, by quaternarization with 2,2'-bis(bromomethyl)-1,1'-binaphtyl, is described and applied to l(-) ephedrine.One of the resulting catalysts gives 37 percent ee in epoxydation of chalcone.
