SnCl4 and AlCl3 form ternary complexes with ketones and HCl in sulfur dioxide solvent.These complexes are the initial products in aromatic Friedel-Crafts acylations.Heats of formation from ketone-AlCl3 adduct and HCl were calculated from the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constants.Relative reactivities are presented for acylation with AlCl3 and SnCl4 at low temperature in sulfur dioxide solution.
