It was established that the side product that is formed in substantial amounts in the phenylation of β-picoline by phenyllithium is 3-methyl-2-phenyl-5-(3-methyl-2-phenyl-3,4-dehydropiperidyl-6)pyridine - a structural analog of anabasine.Its structure was demonstrated by spectral methods and by chemical conversion.
