29 The observed difference in the comproportionation kinetics may signal
the presence of more than one oxidation products in solutions generated
with Ce(IV). The need to use an excess of Ce(IV) to oxidize most of the
TMPD until only traces of the blue radical cation remained (to ensure
that all of the Ce(IV) was consumed) shows that some overoxidation
does take place under such conditions. Attempts to use Ce(IV) directly
in the stopped-flow instrument to improve the mixing were abandoned
for fear that the observed reaction may have contributions from the
direct Ce(IV)-TMPD reaction.
